Pal Suranyi, MD

Pal S. Suranyi, MD, PhD, FNASCI, is a cardiothoracic and cardiovascular radiologist, a physician-scientist dedicated to advancing patient care through clinical excellence, research innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration. He combines rigorous scientific training with patient-centered medical practice to translate emerging imaging breakthroughs into meaningful improvements in diagnosis, treatment and health care outcomes for patients.

With expertise in advanced cardiovascular and cardiothoracic imaging (computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging) in both acquired and congenital heart diseases, Dr. Suranyi’s work focuses on expanding access to advanced cardiac radiology to children and adults throughout South Carolina and beyond. He has contributed to the advancement of the field through numerous peer-reviewed publications, reviewing articles and textbook chapters, participating in clinical trials, and giving educational and scientific lectures at national and international conferences. He is also active in Global Health Outreach to Africa (Uganda and Tanzania) and Indonesia. Dr Suranyi previously held the title of Professor of Radiology and Medicine/Cardiology at the Medical University of South Carolina and participated in the training of hundreds of radiologists and cardiology fellows over the past two decades. He is a Fellow of the North American Society of Cardiovascular Imaging.

Dr. Suranyi earned his medical degree at the Medical School of Pecs in Hungary and his doctorate at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where his research focused on cardiac MRI of ischemic heart disease, parametric mapping and development of novel contrast agents. He completed his fellowship and residency at MUSC, under the wings of Dr. U.J. Schoepf, one of the great pioneers of cardiac radiology. Through his 18 years of collaboration with adult and pediatric cardiology as well as cardiothoracic surgery, Dr Suranyi developed a strong foundation in both clinical medicine and scientific investigation. He serves as Medical Director for Advanced Cardiovascular Radiology at Prisma Health, where his work integrates patient care, state-of-the-art imaging, education and mentorship.
